Anyone who’s done a renovation knows that the waste builds up faster than you’d expect. One day you’re pulling up a bit of old carpet, next thing you know there’s a mountain of debris taking over your driveway and the neighbours are starting to give you looks.

The thing about renovation waste is it comes in waves. Demo phase hits you with huge volumes of bulky stuff – old timber, plasterboard, maybe some dodgy tiles from the ’80s. Then you get the construction phase with offcuts, packaging, more plasterboard dust than seems physically possible. Each trade seems to generate their own special type of mess.

Flooring jobs are particularly brutal for waste. Ripping up old floorboards, underlays, adhesives – it all adds up quick. We’ve seen plenty of jobs where homeowners think they need a 4 cubic metre bin and end up needing an 8. The volume is one thing, but some of that old flooring material needs special handling too.

Timing your skip deliveries becomes crucial. Get it too early and it’s sitting there taking up space before you need it. Too late and you’re stuck with piles of rubbish and cranky tradies. Most renovation jobs need at least two bins – one for the demo phase, another for construction waste.

Council permits can be a pain if you need the bin on the street. Different areas around Geelong have different rules. Some places are pretty relaxed, others want forms filled out weeks in advance. Worth checking with your local council before the job starts.

Flooring renovations are particularly tricky for waste planning. Old timber floors can be surprisingly heavy, and if you’re getting new floors installed, there’s often overlap timing where the old stuff needs to go before the new arrives. For reference on timing challenges, specialists like a timber floor installer would typically need the space completely clear before starting their work.

The key is planning ahead. Work out what waste you’ll have at each stage, book your bins accordingly, and don’t underestimate the volume. Renovation waste has a way of multiplying when you’re not looking.

Better to have a bin that’s slightly too big than spending your weekend at the tip.
